Visit The Sweetheart City

The Sweetheart City is a Colorado gem set between the Rocky Mountains and the high plains grasslands. From Denver you are there in less than an hour. When you leave I25 the first thing to take your breath away is the 50 feet high Equinox Sculpture. Equinox tells the story of Loveland – more on why "the Sweetheart City" in a moment – from its earliest Native American settlers to the present-day city of sculpture.

Chapungu Sculpture Park

A few minutes from the Equinox you find one of two amazing sculpture parks. Chapungu Sculpture Park (Cha-POONG-Goo) holds the world's largest and most important permanent collection of Shona sculptures, some weighing more than three tons.

The chapungu is an eagle considered to be an omen of great good fortune to the Shona people. Strolling the park's acres taking in the awesome beauty of these magnificent works of art is an omen in itself. You may choose to join a tour group and have each of the 82 pieces about Nature, the Spirit World, Village Life and Local Legends explained.

Right next door to Chapungu is Centerra's huge shopping center where you can go on a super spending spree or indulge yourself by taking lunch in one of the many restaurants.

Benson Sculpture Park

From there, your next stop is Benson Sculpture Park. Wander the pathways taking in the 158 pieces, some by world-renowned sculptors. The bronze collection is magnificent. The pieces reflect everything from Colorado wildlife to its people, magic, and amazing abstracts. The High Plains Arts Council, which manages the permanent exhibition, also holds an annual exhibition and sale of new sculptures. Artists from all over America display their works, while thousands of visitors walk around, buying (or wanting to buy) any and all of the pieces on display.

As you drive around this beautiful city you will notice that every utility box has been painted by a local artist, funded by public works projects.

The Sweetheart City

Loveland is known as the Sweetheart City for a special reason. Every year, to celebrate Valentine's Day, every street lamp in the town center is adorned with big red hearts bearing loving messages. And, whether you live in Castle Rock or Connecticut and whether the one you love lives in Westminster or Wyoming, you can send them a special Valentine Card hand-franked with that year's unique Valentine message and the loving Valentine verse chosen in a city-wide contest.

All you have to do is to write your card, address the envelope, put on the right amount of postage, and put that in an envelope address it to Loveland Head Postmaster, and one of the many Valentine volunteers will make sure your envelope is stamped with love and mailed in time to reach your special someone. So, even if you don't come to visit, you can still make your loved one feel special when you arrange a Valentine card from the Sweetheart City.
