3 Fabulous Family Friendly Hikes in Colorado
Posted on Apr 08, 2016Making your home in Colorado means having a front row seat to some of the most extraordinary scenery in the world. We've compiled a list of 3 of our favorite family-friendly hikes in the area that are sure to create lasting memories for the entire family.
Castle and Tower Hike Loop at Mount Falcon
Mt. Falcon Park plays host to this pair of trails near Morrison that deliver a true 'wow factor' for both kids and big kids alike. With real castle ruins from innovative developer John Brisben Walker's early 20th century home, and spectacular sweeping views of Red Rocks and Denver from the Fire Tower, this 4 mile loop makes for a great day trip. The park also offers horseback riding, picnic areas, and covered shelters. Take the East Trailhead located at 3852 Vine St. in Morrison to access the trails.
Lookout Mountain Nature Center Meadow and Forest Loop Trails
Located in Golden, these short .6 mile or .8 mile jaunts are a great way for kids to see for themselves the information that is presented at the center's exhibits. The trails meander through woods around the preserve and are populated by a variety of wildlife such as birds, squirrels, deer, and butterflies. They have a few inclines to make the hikes a bit challenging, and the Nature Preserve itself has a playroom, interactive ecosystem displays, and an observation room. You can check out these laid-back educational trails at 910 Colorow Rd.
Castlewood Canyon State Park's Inner Canyon-Lake Gulch Loop
This fun-filled 2 mile loop offers an adventuresome outing over giant boulders that crisscross the waters of Cherry Creek. The experience starts with a climb down the wooden stairs into this 150 foot deep canyon, where you can take your pick of two ways to cross the stream: via an old-fashioned clapboard bridge or by hopping across the gray slabs of sandstone that help form the canyon floor. The remains of the 1889 Castlewood Canyon Dam, built with horse and mule-power, can be seen just as the trail opens into a wide meadow. After your hike, head over to the park's West side entrance to see the historic Lucas Homestead Ranch. The park is located at 2989 South State Highway 83 in Franktown, about 35 miles southeast of Denver.
