Family Friendly Hikes in Colorado's Front Range, Central Mountains, and Western Slope
Posted on Apr 29, 2016Living in Colorado is all about taking time to enjoy the incredible outdoor opportunities surrounding you! Within minutes of every doorstep are adventure opportunities that range from the wild to mild. In fact, deciding how to spend your family weekends is often the biggest challenge.
If you are new to the area, but ready to get out there with the whole crew, take a look at these Family Friendly Hikes in Colorado.
Front Range: Many wonderful communities line the Front Range providing job opportunities balanced with the mountain life style right at your back door.
Evergreen Lake Hike- This is an easy outing, coming in at just over a mile. Most of the hike is through wetland areas including board-walks built with handicap access. Try to make the journey in the morning and evening hours to catch a glimpse of some of Colorado's incredible wildlife.
Red Rocks Trail at Settler Park- Living on the Front Range means making a stop at the iconic sandstone fins of Red Rocks. When the world-famous rock bands aren't jamming out, these formations are quiet and beautiful. The kids can scramble and explore, while parents enjoy the easy, one mile loop.
Central Mountains:
Breckenridge Family Hikes- The astoundingly beautiful ski town of Breckenridge is right off of I-70 and not even two hours of driving from Denver. Summer in the high country is over-flowing with wildflowers, blue skies and fresh air.
- Check out the mining history of the mountains with a jaunt along the 1.2 mile loop of the Iowa Mine Trail.
- Hoosier Pass Loop will take you up and up with spectacular views from the Continental Divide.
Ready to move a little further up and further in? Try Eagle/Vail Family Hikes.
Sylvan Lake, right outside of Eagle, CO, is an incredible day excursion offering a crystal clear (and cold!) lake with a loop trail and longer spurs for the more adventurous. Bring a picnic lunch and play by the water.
Western Slope:
Ready to ditch the crowds? Go West (even further)! Grand Junction is a moderate sized metropolis on the far edge of the Rocky Mountains. Lesser known than its ski industry counterparts, it still boasts many incredible land features.
Colorado National Monument is a hidden gem of incredible red canyons and pinyon juniper forests.
- Try the Canyon Rim trail for a half mile skip to incredible views.
- Alcove Nature Trail leads the way, again, only a half mile to views of several incredible spires.
- Devils Kitchen Trail is a blast for all your young scramblers, leading the way into a giant rock formation after just under a mile, with hours of potential adventures.
Wherever you are on your journey through this beautiful state, you and your family can take advantage of the unlimited potential for making memories and living the life of outdoor passion you always dreamed of.
