Low Budget Colorado Activities For the Family
Posted on Jun 09, 2017Colorado's spectacular and outstanding natural beauty and its history draw worldwide visitors who are anxious to explore the picturesque scenery, some of the more than 50 mountains that rise to an elevation of 14,000 feet or more, the High Plains just east of the Rocky Mountains, the incredible parks, the vestiges of the Old West, and so much more.
Families traveling to the state will find multiple activities to enjoy without spending a large amount of money. The following are just a few of the suggestions:
Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway
Dinosaur enthusiasts could spend two or three days traveling on this National Scenic Byway and exploring dinosaur fossil quarries and museums. Dinosaurs ruled this land long before humans walked this part of the Earth. When the dinosaurs became extinct, the land was lived upon and worked by ancient Indians.
Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave
Located in Golden, the Museum recounts the life of William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody with artifacts including antique firearms, clothing, other Old West items, and artwork. Museum admission is $5.00 for adults. The grave is in Lookout Mountain Park not far from the museum.
Mount Bierstadt
Located approximately 45 miles from Denver, Mount Bierstadt is one of Colorado’s most accessible of the “Fourteeners,” which are the 14,000-plus-foot peaks. With no special equipment required, it is also one of the easiest for non-experts to climb. You just need to be in good shape, have proper footwear, and be able to acclimate to the altitude. The best and quickest route begins at the parking area at the Guanella Pass and means less than seven miles round-trip.
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens
Located in Vail in one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado, this is the world’s highest botanical garden. With no admission fee, this is certainly a budget-friendly option! Vail also has good skiing, hiking, shopping, and a good selection of restaurants.
